Nov 15, 2024 - 5:00pm

Today, El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal administered the oath of office to 24 POST Certified El Paso County Deputies, four Teller County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, one Fremont County Sheriff's Office Deputy, one Costilla County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, and one Colorado State Parole Officer during the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Training Academy 24-2 Graduation Ceremony at The Road at Chapel Hills Church, in Colorado Springs.

The 31 upstanding new deputies are the fifth class to graduate from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Training Academy with a 24-week POST certification requirement since Sheriff Roybal took office in January 2023.

“Today, we celebrate 31 individuals for their commitment to our communities and public safety across Colorado,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal“The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Training Academy has established a reputation for providing excellent training for law enforcement agencies across Colorado.  I thank Sheriffs Mikesell, Cooper, and Sanchez, as well as Colorado State Division of Adult Parole Director Wolfsgruber, for entrusting my Office to prepare and train their next generation of law enforcement. As the 29th Sheriff of El Paso County, I am committed to continuing this interagency tradition and fostering strong bonds between those who serve across Colorado.”

“It is a privilege to work together on behalf of the citizens of Colorado and ensure peacekeepers receive a top-notch, hands-on education,” said Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell. “Training together creates a fluid work environment for our deputies and allows for streamlined communication and cooperation from our agencies in the future. Criminals don’t respect boundaries, and with a regional training approach, our offices efficiently partner to hold criminals accountable and reduce victims.”

“These strong, collaborative partnerships ensure well-trained, well-prepared members of law enforcement serve citizens across Colorado,” said Fremont County Sheriff Allen Cooper. “No matter how big or small, rural or metropolitan, the community calls home, at the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Training Academy recruits receive exceptional training.”

“The training deputies receive at the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Regional Training Academy is the best in the state and allows for smaller agencies, such as Costilla County, to receive high-level training at no additional cost to our agency or the taxpayers,” said Costilla County Sheriff Danny Sanchez. “Thank you, Sheriff Roybal, for collaborating with my Office and opening up your facility to Costilla County.”

“El Paso County Sheriff Roybal and his team have provided outstanding training for our future officers,” said the Colorado Department of Corrections Executive Director Andre Stancil. “Through this collaborative partnership, graduates are prepared and ready to contribute to our shared public safety mission in Colorado. We are grateful to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office for opening their doors and offering this valuable training opportunity to our future Community Parole Officers.”

The next Regional Training Academy POST-certified class, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office's largest class, will graduate in Spring 2025. Multiple state-wide law enforcement agencies will be represented.
