The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) announces the convictions of two prolific offenders resulting from a four-month investigation into a series of burglaries, motor vehicle thefts, and criminal trespass-auto incidents in the Cimarron Hills and Security-Widefield areas of unincorporated El Paso County.
In November 2023, detectives assigned to the EPSO Investigations Division began investigating a pattern of thefts in which suspects used garage door openers obtained from vehicles to gain access to homes. Stolen items ranged from personal valuables to high-value property such as snowboarding/ skiing equipment, firearms, electronics, and tools.
Following numerous interviews, the execution of over a dozen search warrants, and extensive investigative efforts, two suspects were identified and ultimately charged:
- 22-year-old Gary Cantrell
- 24-year-old Adam Montoya
During the execution of these search warrants, a significant amount of the stolen property was recovered and returned to the rightful owners.
“I am proud of the investigative efforts and skills shown by my detectives throughout this case. My Office is committed to finding and holding these prolific criminals accountable, ensuring victims get the justice they deserve. The length of these sentences is a testament to the quality of work and professionalism displayed by the detectives in my Office.” Sheriff Joseph Roybal
Arrest warrants were issued for both individuals on multiple counts, including 11 counts of Burglary, 4 counts of Motor Vehicle Theft, 24 counts of Criminal Trespass-Auto, 4 counts of Felony Theft, 8 counts of Misdemeanor Theft, 12 counts of Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief, and various counts of Identity Theft-related offenses.
