Suspect Identified in Colorado Springs Police Officer Involved Shooting on Prairie Grass Lane

On October 7, 2024, at approximately 11:56 pm, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Communications Center received reports regarding a suicidal adult male at a residence in the 5100 block of Prairie Grass Lane in Colorado Springs. 

The reporting party stated there was an adult male inside the residence, involved in a disturbance with his roommates, cutting himself with a knife. 

Upon arrival, Colorado Springs Police officers contacted the suspect inside the residence. 

During their contact, the suspect aggressively approached the officers with a knife, resulting in one of the officers discharging their firearm at least one time. 

Officers rendered medical aid to the suspect; American Medical Response arrived on scene and transported him to a local area hospital, where he later died. 

No other community members or officers were injured in this incident.

The suspect has been identified as Matthew D. Kemper, DOB 11/12/1982. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner's Office.

Several attempts have been made to locate and notify Mr. Kemper’s next of kin, to no avail. If members of the public have information regarding the next of kin or family, please contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office non-emergent line at 719-390-5555.

Three CSPD officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave per CSPD's policy.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting. 

This is an ongoing investigation, and we will release information as appropriate.
